Euro vs Boston Bottles: What's the Difference? An NZ Wholesale Buyer's Guide
Two shapes, two different jobs
Spend any time comparing glass bottles and you'll meet the same two names again and again: the Euro dropper bottle and the Boston round. At first glance they're both round glass bottles, often in the same amber. In practice, almost nobody who packages products for a living uses them interchangeably. The difference comes down to two things — how much liquid you're holding, and how your customer gets it out. Settle those and the choice is usually straightforward.
The Euro dropper bottle: built for small, precise doses
The Euro dropper is the standard small-format bottle for products measured in drops. Our range runs from 5ml to 100ml, with amber available in every size, blue across most of them, and green, frosted and clear on the larger bottles. The shape is compact and straight-sided with a short, squared-off shoulder — a bottle that stands solidly on a market table and packs tightly into a carton.
What really defines a Euro bottle, though, is what fits on top of it. The neck is designed around the small dispensing fittings that precision products need: orifice reducers for neat essential oils, pipette droppers (including tamper-evident and measured versions) for diluted blends and tinctures, serum pumps, fine-mist sprays, roller balls, and plain wadded or tamper caps.
If your product is sold in 100ml or less and used a few drops at a time — an essential oil blend, a facial serum or oil, a tincture, a beard oil — you're in Euro territory.
The Boston round: built for volume
The Boston round is the larger of the two formats: a taller body with the gently rounded shoulder the shape is known for, in sizes that begin where the Euro range stops. We stock Boston rounds in 250ml and 500ml (amber and blue) and 1 litre (amber). For a sense of scale, the 500ml stands 169.25mm tall at 74.5mm across, with a 24/400 neck.
The closures follow the size. Boston rounds take pump tops, trigger sprays, fine-mist sprays and plain screw caps — fittings that move liquid in pumps and squirts rather than drops. That suits massage and body oils, carrier oils, liquid soap, room and linen sprays, hair care, cleaning products, and bulk or refill formats of products you might also sell small.
And the sizes in between?
If your product lands between the two ranges — bigger than a 100ml Euro, smaller than a 250ml Boston — the amber syrup bottles cover 100ml and 200ml, with tamper-evident caps and a pump top available on the 100ml. They're the natural stepping stone for tonics, oral blends and other mid-size liquids.
One thing the two ranges share: glass is inert, so both hold oil-based and alcohol-based formulations without reacting. The difference between them is scale and dispensing, not chemistry.

Four things to check before you order
- Match the top to the exact bottle size. Dispensing tops are not one-size-fits-all. Our standalone Euro tops are sold size-specific for 10ml to 100ml bottles (5ml tops come only with the bottle), and Boston closures are listed in their own collection. - Think about what touches the product. Essential oils and high-alcohol formulations can degrade plastics and rubber. For neat oils the convention is an orifice reducer under a solid cap; save pipette droppers for diluted blends.
- Choose colour for the protection you need. Amber filters UV light and is available across both ranges, which makes it the default for oils, tinctures and anything light-sensitive. Blue and green give partial light protection; clear shows the product off and suits formulations that aren't light-sensitive. Frosted is a surface finish rather than UV protection — choose it for the look, not the shelf life.
- Check the physical fit. A 1 litre Boston is a tall bottle. Before committing to a size, check your shelving, courier boxes and label artwork against the dimensions on each product page.
How the quantities work
Both ranges are sold wholesale by the tray: a half tray to sample a size or run small batches, a full tray for the best per-unit price. Tray counts vary with bottle size — a 100ml Euro comes 70 to a full tray and 35 to a half, while a 500ml Boston is 30 and 15 — and the product page states the exact count for each size. Prices are ex-GST, bulk pricing is available on request for orders over 1,000 units, and all stock ships from our Tauranga warehouse, so there are no offshore lead times to plan around.
Plenty of businesses end up stocking both formats: Euro bottles for the retail product, Boston rounds for practitioner sizes, refills or workroom stock. Because both come in amber glass, the two ranges sit together well on a shelf and in your branding.
Choosing your bottles
Start with the dose. If the product is used drops at a time, begin with the Euro dropper bottles and their dropper tops. If it's pumped, sprayed or poured, begin with the Boston round bottles and matching Boston bottle tops.
